Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the things people ask most.

Do I need to install Windows first?

No. On first launch Regulus downloads a Windows image and runs an unattended install for you. You just pick Windows 11 or Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC and a preset.

How is this different from Wine?

Wine reimplements Windows APIs so apps can run directly on Linux. Regulus runs a real Windows machine in QEMU/KVM instead, and streams each app to your desktop over RDP RemoteApp. Anything that runs on Windows should run here, with no compatibility work.

Do I need Docker?

No. Regulus manages its own QEMU/KVM virtual machine and drives it over QMP. There's no Docker and no dockur image in the stack.

Does it work on Wayland?

Yes. Windows are drawn straight to Wayland by sdl-freerdp, so there's no XWayland involved.

Which Linux distributions are supported?

Any distribution that can run Flatpaks and expose the KVM device. Your CPU needs Intel VT-x or AMD-V, and your user has to be able to open /dev/kvm.

Is it ready to use every day?

Not yet. Regulus is pre-release, so expect rough edges. If you hit one, open an issue and we'll take a look.
